The Story of Blue Curaçao
What began as a bitter orange on a dry Caribbean island became a global cocktail essential—thanks to the ingenuity of one Curaçaoan family.
🍊 From Spain to Curaçao: The Laraha Legend
In the 1500s, Spanish explorers brought Valencia orange trees to Curaçao. But under the island’s arid sun, volcanic soil, and scarce rainfall, the fruit transformed. It became the laraha—green, small, and far too bitter to eat.
But there was a secret hidden in the peel. When dried, it released a sweet, citrusy fragrance unlike anything else. That aroma would one day become the soul of a new spirit.
🍊 The Senior Family’s Discovery
Fast forward to 1896. In Willemstad, Edgar Senior and his partner Haim Mendes Chumaceiro were running a pharmacy called Botika Excelsior. Using a family recipe, they created a medicinal citrus aperitif they called “Senior’s Curaçao Tonic.”
Its refreshing taste and unique local flavor quickly grew in popularity. After Haim’s passing, his widow carried on production from her home, keeping the tradition alive. Eventually, in 1945, the business became Senior & Co., and the drink became a cherished cultural product.

🍊 Landhuis Chobolobo: A Home for Curaçao’s Spirit
In 1947, Senior & Co. moved into Landhuis Chobolobo, a majestic 19th-century estate in Willemstad. Today, it remains the only place in the world where genuine Curaçao liqueur is crafted using native laraha peels.
Here, copper stills, artisanal methods, and Curaçaoan pride come together in every bottle. The estate is open to visitors who want to explore the origins of Blue Curaçao and experience its flavor firsthand.
🍊 Why Is It Blue?
Although the liqueur is naturally clear, it’s famously tinted vibrant blue—a tribute to the sparkling Caribbean Sea. This visual twist helped it stand out in global bars and clubs, becoming a key ingredient in tropical cocktails like the Blue Lagoon and the Blue Hawaiian.
But don’t be fooled by the imitations—only Senior & Co. uses authentic laraha peel, making theirs the only true Curaçao liqueur.
🏴☠️ Pirates, Parrots & Potions: Local Legends
Local lore adds a splash of magic. Some say pirates mistook Blue Curaçao for a sea elixir, burying barrels on the island’s north coast. Others tell of a talking parrot who once guarded the original recipe, or a ghostly distiller who still haunts Landhuis Chobolobo, drawn to the citrus scent.
🍊 A Global Journey, Rooted in Curaçao
From humble pharmacy beginnings to international fame, Blue Curaçao’s story is one of resilience, family tradition, and island innovation. Through it all, the Senior family’s commitment to authenticity has never wavered.
Today, every bottle tells a story. A story of oranges that turned bitter. Of people who saw potential. Of Curaçao’s enduring flavor—bottled, blue, and beautifully bittersweet.
